Early Morning
Discovery Hikes Continue!
Darke County Parks...
If you haven’t attended one of the Early Morning Discovery Hikes this
summer with Darke County Parks, you’re missing out! Lately, we have
been travelling to many different parks, searching for as many species
of birds, wildflowers, dragonflies and more that we can discover.
Last week took us to the “walk-in entrance” of Shawnee Prairie
Preserve, just off of Chestnut Street. We visited the marsh and
walked along the path towards the model airplane flying field
“What a day for a hike! We had a nice cool, low-humidity morning
for the first time in weeks,” stated Park Naturalist Robb Clifford.
“Not only did we enjoy it, the birds seemed to as well, with the most
activity we’ve seen for some time. Many birds were seen and heard
that morning with the most exciting being the two Green Herons spotted
within the marsh and the Yellow-billed Cuckoo fly-over. It was
nice to hear and see some of the local species that have been hiding
from the heat over the past few weeks.”
The Early Morning Discovery Hikes are held every Tuesday at the Nature
Center and we begin at 8am. If you would like any more information,
please visit our website, www.darkecountyparks.org, or feel free to contact
the Nature Center at 937-548-0165. See you on the trails!
