Digital Media X 2011
draws artists to Edison campus March 11
Area high school and community college artists, illustrators, designers
and videomakers will converge on the Piqua Main Campus of Edison
Community College March 11 from 9 am to 2 pm for the 2011 edition of
Digital Media X.
“Digital Media X exposes students to a professional conference
atmosphere with keynotes, breakouts and demonstrations of the latest
tools and trends in digital media,” said Brad Reed, Assistant Professor
for Interactive Media at Edison. “DMX also gives students an audience
for their work outside the classroom, and they can see what others in
the field are doing. It’s a very energetic and exciting day.”
High school classes from all Shelby, Miami and Darke County schools are
invited to attend, as are current Edison and other community college
students interested in digital media as a career option.
The keynote will be a video teleconference with Sidney natives Bill and
Turner Ross. The brothers are creators of the movie “45365,” a
feature-length documentary about their hometown which they shot and
edited using digital media tools. The film has garnered awards
nationally and internationally, and is a favorite of notable critics
such as Roger Ebert, who writes for the Chicago Sun-Times. The Ross
brothers will be addressing DMX via teleconference from the site of
their current project on the Texas-Mexico border.
Breakout sessions will feature hands-on demonstrations of digital media
tools and techniques as well as discussions about career opportunities
in the digital media field. Students who submit artwork prior to March
4 can have their work displayed and critiqued by Edison’s faculty. New
to DMX this year is a college transfer midway, with representatives of
Edison and partner colleges and universities, including the University
of Cincinnati, Ohio University, Franklin University and the Savannah
College of Art and Design.
Edison’s degree programs sponsoring DMX are the Internet Technologies
and Interactive Media program, which will use the DMX event to debut a
Digital Media Design and Development associate degree and six related
certificates new for the 2011-12 academic year. Also sponsoring is the
Commercial Art program under the direction of Associate Professor
Michael Fleishman. Fleishman is an acclaimed illustrator and author,
with six books in print.
