Early Morning
Discovery Hike Report
Darke County Parks...
With highs in the 90s, humidity and mosquitoes to boot, it seems as
though summer has arrived!
While the above may not be your cup of tea, remember that with these
less-desirable traits, summer also brings with it cool mornings and
evenings, perfect for hiking! Speaking of hiking...
This week’s Early Morning Discovery Hike was a warm one, but we did get
nearly 30 species of birds, although we had to work for them!
Being in the middle of nesting season, most species have much more on
their minds as they are rushing back and forth feeding the little ones
any form of insect they can catch! In addition to the birds, we
had several butterfly species, including Tiger Swallowtails and Black
Swallowtails. We also had our first dragonflies of the
season! A female Common Whitetail dragonfly was following us
along the boardwalk, hopefully enjoying a feast of mosquitoes!
Several wildflowers were still blooming in the woods and soon the
prairies will have splashes of colors dotting the landscape.
It looks like it’s going to be a warm one, but we have plenty of
exciting programs for people of all ages, so be sure to check out the
Nature Notes and get your calendars marked! From CAMPS to fitness
walks to birding to special speakers and so much more, you’re bound to
find something you like!
Check out our Early Morning Discovery Hikes each Tuesday morning at 8am
held at Shawnee Prairie Preserve.
