Darke County Parks:
Upcoming Events
Posted March 8, 2011
Timberdoodle Trek
Thursday, March 10 at 5:30 PM at Shawnee Prairie Preserve
This usually secretive shorebird species shrugs off his enigmatic ways
in early spring in hopes of wooing any passing females. While many male
birds have bright colors or other ways to impress females, the American
Woodcock takes it one step further. The male will launch from the
ground, spiral high into the air, with a characteristic twittering
sound emitting from his feathers. Once he reaches the peak of the
spiral, he’ll dive quickly towards the ground and resume his nasal
‘peent’ calls.
Jr. Naturalist- Searching
for spring!
Saturday, March 19,10AM -12:30 PM; Worth Family Preserve
Cabin Fever! Dust off your boots, suit up for whatever weather March is
throwing at us and meet me at Worth. We’ll head along the trails
in search of spring. Will it be the first blooms, green leaves, and
animal signs? Time will tell. This searching for spring program is for
children 10-12 years old. Please call the Nature Center for additional
information and to pre-register for the program. Hope to see you on the
19th!
Searching for Sallies
Saturday, March 19, 1:30 PM; Shawnee Prairie Preserve
During the first warm rain of spring, salamanders, leave their winter
dens and flock to the nearest vernal (spring) pool. While we
likely won’t be lucky enough to have a warm rain on this day we can
head out to Drew Woods State Nature Preserve and roll a few logs! Drew
Woods is the perfect habitat and has many exciting species of
salamanders. Call the Nature Center to sign up as admittance to this
preserve is limited.
