Early Morning
Discovery Hike Report
Darke County Parks
This week’s hike was another wet and chilly one! There wasn’t any
rainfall during the hike, but everything was definitely fully
saturated. The water has gone down a bit from last week, but with
more rain in the forecast, we could have some more flooding.
There are most definitely signs of spring appearing in the form of
birds singing. The hike started with the unmistakable honking of
Canada geese flying overhead. As the hike continued down the
boardwalk, muddy tracks of raccoons were everywhere. Walking up
and around the hill, we heard Chickadees, Robins, Cardinals, Juncos,
White-Breasted Nuthatches, and Song Sparrows. We also spotted
some Red-winged Blackbirds, Starlings and Crows. As we finished
up the hike, we saw two mallards on “Lake Shawnee.” The
next couple of weeks should provide some more definite signs of
spring’s arrival.
Feel free to join us this coming Tuesday morning at 8AM for the Early
Morning Discovery Hike at Shawnee Prairie Preserve.

Searching for Sallies
Saturday, March 19 @ 1:30 PM
During the first warm rain of spring, salamanders leave their winter
dens and flock to the nearest vernal (spring) pool. While we
likely won’t be lucky enough to have a warm rain on this day, we can
head out to Drew Woods State Nature Preserve and roll a few logs! Drew
Woods is the perfect habitat and has many exciting species of
salamanders. Call the Nature Center at 937.548.0165 to sign up as
admittance to this preserve is limited.
See you on the Trails!
