Name the Trail Contest
Darke County Park District...
The system of paved trails in Darke County is expanding! As the
finishing touches are put on the first expansion of the trail this
summer that began in Gettysburg, we will now have 8.2 miles to enjoy!
The cross county trail needs to be named! When completed over a period
of years, the trail will go from Bradford through Gettysburg, on
through Greenville to Union City, IN. The trail will eventually
connect to the Miami County trail system in the east and Indiana’s
Cardinal Greenway trail system in the west. It is a part of the
National Rails to Trails East to West Coast trail system.
Most of the trail is being constructed on abandoned rail corridor and
even includes a section of rail corridor that President Abraham
Lincoln’s Funeral Trail traveled on. Who knows, maybe Annie
Oakley and Lowell Thomas rode on it
too!
A contest has been set. We need a GREAT name for the trail.
Submit your ideas by October 1 to the Darke Co. Park District at PO Box
801, Greenville, OH 45331 or drop off at the Nature Center at 4267 St.
Rt. 502 W., Greenville, OH 45331(include address, email and phone
information please). One idea per submission please!!! But
more than one submission can be made.
All names considered will be judged anonymously by the Phoenix
Committee. This group has worked to obtain the Ohio Department of
Natural Resources Clean Ohio Fund grants for the trails’
creation. In case of a tie for a name chosen and submitted by
more than one contestant, a drawing may be held. Final
determination will be at the discretion of the Board of Park
Commissioners of Darke County Park District.
Names of other OH trails include: Ohio to Erie Trail, Little Miami
Scenic Trail, Creekside Trail, Simon Kenton Trail, Iron Horse Trail,
Wolf Creek Trail, etc. The paved trail is great for all
non-motorized usage. Horse riders may enjoy the grassy sides of the
trail. The latest addition of paved trail extends to the east to
Bradford-New Harrison Rd. and to the west over Rt. 36, to Mill St.
sharing the road on Hahn and Spidel Roads and ending up back on the
rail road right-of-way to Arcanum Bear’s Mill Rd. Get out and
enjoy your trails!
