Edison Hosts Seventh Annual 5K
for
Cancer...
Race donates funds to UVMC and an area
family
The
seventh annual Chris
Cianciolo/Edison 5K for Cancer Race will take place on Oct. 8, 2011 at
the
Piqua main campus. Half of the proceeds from the event will go directly
to the
UVMC Cancer Care Center with the other half going to a local Cancer
Care Center
patient and their family to help them with the financial burdens of
this
disease.
The
race begins with a 1-Mile Fun Run
for Kids at 8:30 a.m. followed by the 5K Walk/Run at 9 a.m.
Pre-registration
ends September 29. Entry fees are $12 for pre-registered participants
and $15
for race day registrations. Pre-registered participants will receive a
free
t-shirt and additional shirts will be sold for $5 on race day.
“We’re
very proud of this event and
the help it’s brought to families in our community,” said Sean Ford,
the race
coordinator. “It’s held to raise awareness for all types of cancer, and
it’s
also a tribute to family and those who have lost someone to the
disease.”
The
race is held in memory of Chris
Cianciolo, Ford’s aunt, who lost her 15-year battle with cancer in 2005.
This
year’s recipient is Sidney native
Scott Arnold. Scott was diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2011 and is
undergoing aggressive treatment. Scott and his wife Chris have four
children
and ten grandchildren with one on the way. The money raised from this
race will
help the Arnold family with some of the expenses incurred from this
disease.
Last
year’s race raised approximately
$3,000 and had more than 200 participants.
The
5-kilometer race is an
“out-and-back” course, Ford said, and is run entirely on pavement.
“Registration
has begun and we have
already received a good amount of pre-registered runners, walkers,
joggers and
crawlers!” said Ford. “We hope to have an even bigger turn out for this
year’s
event.”
