Woman touts unique
background in Ohio Supreme Court run
April 12, 2012
By Greg Sowinski
LIMA — Sharon Kennedy’s journey to judge has gone a different route
than most and its the experience she received, including starting out
as a police officer, she said makes her the best candidate for the Ohio
Supreme Court.
Kennedy is running as a Republican challenging Yvette McGee Brown, the
only Democrat on the state’s highest court, to fill out a two-year
term. Whoever wins, will have to run again in 2014.
The 50-year-old Kennedy began as a Hamilton city police officer in 1985
after graduating from the University of Cincinnati. After nearly four
years, she began law school and left police work to focus on her
studies. In 1991, she passed the bar exam and became an attorney, and
in what may seem like an unusual move for a person from a police
background, she became a defense attorney.
“I think it helps to be on both sides. I got to see the world like most
people don’t see it. Sometimes good people at their worst and sometimes
the worst people at their worst,” she said of police work.
