Darke County Red Cross...
School Kids Can Raise
the Flag to Show their Support!
Month of March is Red Cross Month
March 1, 2012 Darke County, OH— Did you know that Clara Barton is known
to be one of the most honored female pioneers and humanitarians in
American history? She was among the first women to gain employment in
the federal government and she dedicated herself to bringing supplies
and support to soldiers in the field during the Civil War.
When she founded the American Red Cross at age 60, she opened paths to
the new field of volunteer service, and at the end of the Civil War,
Barton helped identify the graves of nearly 13,000 Union men,
memorializing their graves and raising a flag over the grounds at their
dedication in 1865. History is interesting! Imagine if Mrs.
Barton was around today, what would she think? Well, the
organization she started, the American Red Cross, is still here and
just as important as it was when she started on the battlegrounds of
the Civil War, nursing soldiers, earning her the nickname, “Angel of
the Battlefield”.
Throughout the month of March, which is designated as Red Cross Month,
the local Red Cross Chapter is asking that Darke County students get
creative by creating or capturing their own version of the American Red
Cross Flag. We ask that students draw, make or find a Red Cross flag,
take a photo or video and upload it (or have a parent or teacher help
them) to the Darke County Chapter Facebook page. Uploaded photos will
be entered for a chance to be featured on the national Redcross.org
website. It’s really that simple, learning a bit about history
and bringing it forward to today’s social media. Students of all
ages are invited to participate.
Annually, the President of the United States declares the month of
March as Red Cross Month. The flag, bearing a red cross on a white
field, symbolizes the mission of the American Red Cross – to serve
others. Area business will be posting flyers with American Red Cross
flags as well as the Darke County Chapter office. Students can
contact their teacher for help, the Darke County Chapter Red Cross
548-1002 or check out the page on Facebook page for more
details.
