The Garst
Museum Lecture Series #1
Ohio
Native
American Indians: A Sorrowful Journey
Garst Museum
in Greenville, Ohio is pleased to announce the first lecture of the
2012-2013
Speaker Series. On
Sunday, October 14,
2012 at 2:00 p.m. the museum will welcome Randall Buchman,
Distinguished
Professor Emeritus of History at Defiance College. Professor Buchman
specializes in Ohio Valley American Indian studies and has worked at
prehistoric sites in Ohio and Indiana.
Professor
Buchman’s lecture will focus on his book, A Sorrowful Journey. The
lecture will
chronicle the removal of the Shawnee, Seneca, and Ottawa Indians from
Ohio in
1832 based on the recently discovered journal of John Shelby. Shelby
was an
assistant conductor on the journey as the tribes followed their own
“trail of
tears,” walking across four states to lands west of the Mississippi
River.
Professor Buchman’s presentation will include illustrations of Shelby’s
journal
and maps.
These
popular lecture series are free and open to the public.
Support for the Garst Lecture Series comes,
in part, from Harry D. Stephens Memorial Trust, Inc.
