OSU Extension, Darke County
2013 Ohio Beef Cattle School
By Sam Custer
The Ohio State University Extension Beef Team is announcing the
upcoming 2013 Ohio Beef Cattle School. This monthly series will begin
on Tuesday, January 29, and continue on February 26 and March 19, 2013,
and will start each evening at 7:00 p.m. The programs will address some
of the most important issues currently facing Ohio's beef industry.
Dynamic forces are constantly shaping the beef industry's landscape and
successful producers need to stay abreast of changes to remain
competitive.
The January 29, 2013, program features two well-respected and
recognizable industry names serving as resources for that session. Lee
Leachman, Leachman Cattle Company of Colorado, and Dr. Nevil Speer,
Professor of Animal Science at Western Kentucky University, will
discuss the subject "Breeding Considerations in Today's Beef Industry."
Leachman will discuss how crossbreeding can add profit to the
producer's bottom line, practical methods to adopt a crossbreeding
program, and making right-sized cows. Dr. Speer will discuss the
apparent de-emphasis on heterosis by some commercial cow-calf producers
and how advanced genetic selection tools, an evolving genetic base, and
the growth of quality-driven markets have contributed to this
phenomenon.
The February 26, 2013, program will focus on the topic "Squeezing Every
Dollar out of Forage Production." Rory Lewandowski, Extension Educator,
Agriculture and Natural Resources, OSU Extension-Wayne Co. and Chris
Penrose, Extension Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources, OSU
Extension-Morgan Co., will be the speakers that evening. They will
address extending the grazing season, hay production, weed control, and
drought recovery.
The final installment of the school will be held on March 19, 2013, and
will focus on "Enterprises to Remain Competitive in the Beef Industry."
John Grimes, OSU Extension Beef Coordinator, Jeff McCutcheon, Extension
Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources, OSU Extension-Morrow
County, and a variety of producers will present options such as
backgrounding, stockering, targeting branded programs, raising
replacement heifers, and raising embryo calves as unique marketing
options.
These sessions will follow a similar format used in the past as each
session will be broadcast locally via an internet link at a variety of
locations around state.

web-based internet school at the Shelby County Extension Office in
