“The Greenville
Poets” at Authors Night
The Greenville Public Library's Friends are again hosting three
Author's Nights this winter! The first of these events will be
Friday,
January 11th at Montage in downtown Greenville. Doors open at
6:00 in
plenty of time to order supper or snacks before the Authors begin their
talks and readings at 7:00. Bill Westfall and J.R. Price complete
the
evening with their festive music.
The Greenville Poets is a group formed in 1985 by Miriam Vermilya,
Myrna Stone, and Belinda Rismiller. Today their members are
Myrna,
Belinda, Lianne Spidel, Cathy Essinger, David Lee Garrison, and Suzanne
Kelly-Garrison – all of whom will be reading on the 11th. The
Greenville Poets have published ten books of poems, three volumes of
translation, one book of literary criticism, and two anthologies.
Cathy Essinger is the author of three books: A Desk in the Elephant
House won the Walt McDonald First Book Award from Texas Tech University
Press; My Dog Does Not Read Plato was runner up in the 2004 Main Street
Rag book competition; What I Know About Innocence, which includes a
video poem produced by her son David, was published in 2009. Her
work
has appeared in anthologies and reviews and read on Garrison Keillor's
Writer's Almanac. She received an Ohio Arts Council grant and was
Ohio's Poet of the Year in 2005.
David Lee Garrison recently retired from teaching Spanish and
Portuguese at Wright State. His poems have appeared nationwide in
various literary journals. Browser Books published two of his
four
books: Sweeping the Cemetery and Playing Bach in the D.C. Metro.
Garrison Keillor read two of his poems on The Writer's Almanac and Poet
Laureate Ted Kooser featured one on his website American Life in Poetry.
Suzanne Kelly-Garrison is a fiction writer who has in the past few
years turned to poetry. She was a winner in the Dayton Daily News
annual contest for one of her short stories and she won a Montgomery
County Arts Council grant for a selection from her novel The Stolen
Child.
Suzanne teaches law in the College of Business at Wright State.
Belinda Rismiller has been writing for more than 20 years and has
received two Professional Assistance Awards, one from the Ohio Arts
Council and one from the Darke County Arts Council. She writes
realistic poetry about family and farm life.
Lianne Spidel taught high school English for 31 years and now teaches
college writing though Edison Community College. She's published
poems
in many journals and anthologies as well as three books: Chrome, What
To tell Joseme, and Pairings. Pairings was in collaboration with
Anne
Loveland, a Michigan artist. One of her favorite poetry subjects
is
art as well as people, especially family members.
Myrna Stone's newest book, In the Present Tense: Portraits of My
Father, is coming this May from Kelsay Books. She has three other
books: The Casanova Chronicles which was a 2011 finalist for the
Ohioana Book Award in Poetry; How Else to Love the World; and The Art
of Loss for which she received the 2001 Ohio Poet of the Year
Award.
She has received two Ohio Arts Council Fellowships in Poetry, a Full
Fellowship to Vermont Studio Center, and the 2002 Poetry Award from
Weber–The Contemporary West. Her poems have appeared in many
journals,
reviews, and anthologies.
The Greenville Poets have a fun surprise for Authors Night which will
involve audience participation in choosing which poems are read.
