Gettysburg
The
Cardinal Center Grounds Cleanup and Meeting Set for July 20
Gettysburg,
OH – A volunteer group headed-up by Oakland Church of
the Brethren will be meeting at The Cardinal Center (formerly, the
Gettysburg
Elementary School), 260 E. Main St., Saturday morning, July 20, to
clean up the
playground and remove obsolete equipment. All who would like to help
are
welcome. It is recommended that volunteers arrive at 8:30, but may
arrive at
any time. At 10:00, a short informational meeting will be hosted by
Mayor Jason
Lance to explain the village’s plans for the property. This is a public
meeting
and anyone with an interest in the future of the center is encouraged
to
attend. Councilwoman, Patsy Riley, will also be on hand to answer to
questions.
The Gettysburg School was founded in 1866. The main building containing
the
bulk of the classrooms was built in 1921. The east end of the building
containing the gymnasium with stage was built in 1952, replacing a
500-seat
auditorium. In addition to the building, the grounds include a
playground,
basketball court, and a ball field with a large terraced seating area.
In 1972,
the Gettysburg School consolidated with Greenville City Schools and
became the
Gettysburg Elementary School. The facility was closed by Greenville
City
Schools in 2007 and sold. The property was subsequently purchased by
the
Village of Gettysburg in 2012 and renamed The Cardinal Center in 2013
after the
school’s mascot before consolidation.
