Child
nurturing discussions at 2014 Parish Café
VERSAILLES
- The 2014 Parish Café series, the free community education
presentations sponsored by St. Denis, Holy Family and Immaculate
Conception Catholic Churches, will begin this year with discussions
on the importance of protecting children and positive ways to build
“kind confidence” in childhood
Feb.
12, Steve White, a Catholic Social Services counselor who has worked
with families and children for over 25 years will present:
“Recognizing the Signs of Bullying and Abuse.” White will share
his insights as a father who adopted a special needs child and as a
mental health professional. White has observed the harm that is
inflicted by bullies and has helped clients overcome the harm caused
by mental and physical abuse. During his one-hour
presentation,
White
will discuss the signs of abuse and help parents initiate
conversations about bullying and encourage parents and teachers to
reinforce tolerant attitudes and respect within families and peer
groups.
On
March 12, White will continue the community conversation with a
presentation, “Helping Your Child Deal with Mean.” In this second
session, White will discuss parenting strategies to help encourage
the development of “kind confidence.” The counselor will talk
with parents and teachers about the competitive environment that
children are expected to successfully navigate. He will also discuss
opportunities for building self-esteem and the balance that can
inspire children to be kind, resilient and successful.
The
2014 Parish Café offerings are being sponsored by St. Denis, Holy
Family, and Immaculate Conception Catholic churches in collaboration
with Catholic Social Services. The speaker series is designed to
provide information and professional support to those who wish to
bring faith and values into the everyday life of their family. The
programs are open to the general public without cost. The
presentations are held from 6 to 7 p.m. at St. Denis Church, lower
level meeting area, 14 East Wood St., Versailles.
