Edison
engages young minds
with STEM Camp
Edison Community College is
offering an entertaining and engaging way for students entering
grades 8-10 to spend part of their summer vacation. The College will
be offering its popular STEM Camp (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics) Monday, July 28 through Thursday, July 31 at the
Piqua campus.
“We’re looking forward
to offering this camp to students once again,” said Shirley Moore,
Dean of Business, Information Technology and Engineering. “It has
been tremendously popular in the past!”
Students attending Edison’s
STEM Camp will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of
sessions ranging from computers and web site design to medical
technology and crime scene investigation. There will be a
two-and-a-half hour session in the morning and one in the afternoon
where students can interactively experience a variety of high-tech
fields from Edison staff and faculty.
“This camp provides
students with a great opportunity to really gain a better
understanding of STEM fields through hands-on learning,” added
Moore. “The need for STEM occupations is projected to increase
dramatically over the next ten years so it’s important for students
to explore these fields now to find out if it’s something they may
want to do in the future.”
This year’s camp will
feature a session called Take a Bite of Raspberry Pi, which gives
students the tools and instruction on how to build a microcomputer,
create simple games and use it to stream videos or television. An
additional technology session will provide them with opportunity to
work with digital cameras and web-based editing tools to learn the
basic techniques of photo editing and web site design.
A hands–on crime scene
investigation session gives students the opportunity to explore a
crime scene and learn about evidence collection techniques. Campers
will take measurements and draw diagrams to find out what really
happened. Another session will teach students to build, program, and
compete with robots.
Registration is limited to
the first 100 students and is requested by July 15. Registration for
daily sessions begins each day at 8 a.m. with one two-and-a-half hour
session in the morning and one in the afternoon. Lunch is provided
and the day’s sessions end at 2 p.m. For more information or to
