Edison brings
Cost of Poverty Experience to Campus
It has been reported by the U.S. Census Bureau that over fifteen
percent of the American population lives below the poverty line. To
help community leaders better understand the struggles associated with
poverty, Edison Community College’s Academy for Community Leadership
(the Academy) is hosting a Cost of Poverty Experience (C.O.P.E.). The
event will be held on Wednesday, November 19 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. in
the Robinson Theater at the Piqua Campus and is being offered free of
charge.
C.O.P.E. is a powerful simulation that has been used to help many
organizations and communities across the nation work more effectively
with low-income families and understand the issues of poverty more
comprehensively. C.O.P.E. demonstrates the lives of low-income
individuals and families, providing participants with an unforgettable
experience. It provides a glimpse into the obstacles that are faced,
the decisions that must be made, and the consequences that impact these
families every day.
Funded through the CareSource Foundation and conducted by Think Tank,
these relevant, up-to-date events, were co-designed with low-income
individuals who shared their story so that participants could gain
greater understanding.
A special College Edition will also be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30
p.m. to demonstrate the struggles of under-resourced college students.
The C.O.P.E. College Edition will reveal the challenges surrounding
student enrollment, retention, and non-academic barriers, which
influence college success. The event will bring participants together
to ensure hard-working students succeed.
The mission of the Academy is to strengthen not–for–profit
organizations by providing quality educational and training
opportunities designed to develop more effective directors, leaders,
board members, staff and volunteers of not-for-profit organizations.
The CareSource Foundation invests in health and human service
not-for-profits, programs and research. The Foundation funds
innovative, long-term approaches to positively impact critical health
issues. In addition, the Foundation coordinates opportunities for
community outreach, medical expertise, strategic community partnerships
and volunteerism. For more information about the CareSource Foundation,

The deadline to register is November 14. For further information or to
