Lincoln’s Final
Journey through Ohio
Beginning on April 21, 1865, over a 12 day period, the Lincoln Funeral
Trail traveled 1,654 miles through seven states. Thousands of
people in Ohio alone gathered along the tracks to pay their
respects. The train stopped in several Ohio towns and Lincoln’s
coffin was transported from the depot by horse-drawn hearse.
All along the route west of Columbus flags were displayed, bells
tolled, fires raged and torches stood silently along the tracks.
The Lincoln Funeral train passed through Gettysburg in the wee hours of
the morning that late April, solidifying Darke County’s role in our
rich, national history.
The train traveled through the very location where the Gettysburg Hub
of the Tecumseh Trail is found today.
Darke County Parks is commemorating the historic event this weekend,
April 18 and 19 with the Lincoln Funeral Train Tribute.
From Saturday 10a-4pm and Sunday 9am-3pm, several events will take
place in Gettysburg on Bridge Street at the trail head.
Saturday, visitors will find the 35th Light Infantry Historical
Interpreters sharing their historical knowledge. Visitors will be
encouraged to bike or walk the trail, children will enjoy making a
Lincoln themed craft and more. The Cardinal Center in Gettysburg
will have food available and parking.
Begin Sunday at 9am with a non-denominational church service.
Following the morning service, a Lincoln Look-a-Like contest will take
place, the 35th Light Infantry Historic Interpreters are offering
programs, the Dayton Lincoln Society will visit with Abraham and Mary
Lincoln interpreters and much more.
