Edison Community College
Welcome home to
Vietnam Veterans
Miami Valley Veterans Museum board president, Stephen Larck, and museum
executive director, Mitch Fogle, are pleased to announce that
Lieutenant Colonel Mike Jackson, the national chair of “Operation
Welcome Home,” will be giving greetings at the area ceremony to honor
Vietnam and Vietnam Era veterans scheduled for April 23 at 7 pm at
Edison Community College in Piqua.
In addition to a program featuring local Vietnam veterans Mel Shane,
Jim Miller, and David Norman, the musical group Thien Snipps will
perform folk, rock, and contemporary selections for 30 minutes
before the program as well as during the program. Scheduled for the
program is traditional patriotic music as well as the popular “Silver
Medals and Sweet Memories.”
The Veterans Elite Tribute Squad, under the direction of Vietnam
Era veteran Chuck Morris, will post colors, fire a salute, and play
“Taps” and “Echo Taps.” A special area with a photograph of the Vietnam
Wall will be in the lobby of the theatre at Edison so that audience
members whose friends, classmates and family died in the
Vietnam War, or as a result of that war, can display photographs, leave
messages or write names on cards.
Following “Echo Taps,” persons who wish to do so may grab refreshments
provided by over 20 generous Edison employees and return to the theatre
for an 18-minute showing by Vietnam Era veteran Ted Jones of Western
Ohio Television Consortium’s oral histories of area veterans.
Special awards will be given during the program to all Vietnam
and Vietnam Era veterans as well as to Glen Devers, Nick
Essinger, and Ted Jones for their volunteer work on behalf of
veterans.
Community members are invited to attend and no reservations are
necessary. A display of artifacts from the Vietnam War from
the Miami Valley Veterans Museum, a display by identical
twins Lloyd and Lowell Perry (who served together in Vietnam and
are participating in longitudinal studies to determine the impact of
service in that war on wellness), as well as a display of the post-war
work of John Looker, winner of three Purple Hearts for service in
Vietnam, will be available for viewing.
The theatre at Edison is wheelchair accessible, and a seating area at
the front of the theatre will be provided.
