Black History Month keynote speaker, Joshua I. Smith

Celebrates Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month, the Diversity Committee at Edison
Community College is hosting a special keynote address from Mr. Joshua
I. Smith. A nationally renowned entrepreneur, business executive and
speaker, Mr. Smith will address the topic, “Economic Rights Assure
Civil Rights.” The free event will be held in the Robinson Theater at
the Piqua Campus on February 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and is open to
the community.
Smith has founded many businesses including one of the largest and
fastest growing African American companies in the United States, MAXIMA
Corporation. A nationally recognized expert on entrepreneurship, he was
appointed by former President George H.W. Bush as the first Chairman of
the U.S. Commission on Minority Business Development.
In addition to serving on numerous high–ranking national boards, he is
the recipient of over 400 awards, citations, and honors for outstanding
achievement including five honorary doctorate degrees. Since 2008,
Smith has served as host of Biz Talk, a weekly business program on CBS
Radio in Washington, D.C. and other radio stations. Smith, a 1963
graduate of Central State University, resides with his wife in
Washington, D.C.
The event will also feature art contest displays and awards, local
business displays, and entertainment. The art contest will feature work
that depicts black history from students in kindergarten through
twelfth grade as well as college students and adults. Those interested
in participating in the art contest are asked to submit artwork by
