DCP Volunteers
June Message & Events
The Staff and the Park Board are deeply saddened by the passing of
Joseph, the Red-tailed Hawk. He died of natural causes on May
7th. We assume he was around 10 years old. If you
require additional information, please contact Robb or Roger.
Thank you for all that you do for the Park District.
Below are the volunteer opportunities we have planned for the month of
June. Please let me know if you are available to assist with any of the
projects/ tasks.
• Early Morning Discovery Hike
Join a Naturalist at 8AM on Tuesday mornings and hike the trails to see
who calls Darke County Parks their home.
• Butterfly Monitoring
Do you like BUTTERFLIES?! Join us at 2PM on Friday afternoons and
assist with Butterfly Monitoring. Beginners and experienced individuals
are welcome to join us as we hike a preset trail recording the
butterfly population of Shawnee Prairie.
Tuesday, June 2nd - Task Force- 8:30AM
Join us today at Chestnut Marsh for tree removal along the levy. Please
bring your chainsaw and chaps/chainsaw equipment. Let me know if
you are interested in helping.
Tuesday, June 2nd Wetland Program 10AM-12PM
Are you interested in helping students learn about marco-invertebrates?
If so, please come join us today.
Tuesday, June 2nd - Friends of the Park Meeting- 6:30 PM
Are you already a Friends’ member or would you like to join?
Please plan on attending the monthly meeting at the Nature Center.
Margaret Hensel will be presenting the program on one of her travels.
Thursday, June 4th - Task Force- 8:30AM

Thursday, June 4th Bake Oven Class- 9AM
Are you interested in learning how to use the Bake Oven? Join us at the
Log House on Thursday, June 4th at 9AM as we plan to fire up the Bake
Oven. During this class we will learn the proper way to use the
Bake Oven, what can be made in it, and much more! As the oven is
heating the volunteers will be busy preparing a variety of foods
(breads, muffins, cookies) to be baked in the oven and all who attend
will be able to sample the goodies. Our hopes are to be wrapped up by
4-5PM. The Park District will be providing lunch! Please bring
your own drinks, lawn chair and dress for the weather.
All volunteers are welcomed and encouraged to join us as you don't have
to be a Log House Volunteer to attend. If you are interested in
joining us please let Laura know by Wednesday, June 3rd.
Saturday, June 6th- Float the Greenville- 10AM
Do you have paddling experiences? Come and assist us in paddling
the Greenville Creek. Please bring a water bottle, sunscreen and a
lunch. Give us a call today as we could use your help!
Saturday, June 6th -Raptor Open House- 1-3PM
Are you interested in hosting the raptor mew for the public to view our
Great Horned Owl, if so please call me today.
Thursday, June 11th- Task Force- 8:30AM
Join us today at Shawnee Prairie and split wood for the Log House
programs. Please bring gloves and water. Let me know if you are able to
help.
Saturday, June 13th- Park Pals- 9:30AM
Join us today at Worth Family Preserve and assist the Park Pal class in
discovering which animals call Greenville Creek home.
Saturday, June 13th- Bike to Health- 2PM
Join a Naturalist at the Gettysburg Access Point (Bridge Street) as we
will ride the bike trail. Please bring your helmet and a water bottle.
If you are able to attend please let Laura know.
Get Out and Paddle- Sumer Camp- 1-4PM (please arrive at 12:40PM)
Do you enjoy paddling and camping? If so, please come help us with the
10 -12 year old summer camp. ** Previous paddling experience required.

Wednesday, June 17th- Paddle the River**
Thursday, June 18th- Paddling and Camping at Lake Loramie State Park
Saturday, June 20th- Jr. Naturalists- 9:00AM-12:30PM
Assist the Jr. Naturalist program today as they spend the morning
exploring the wetlands at Shawnee Prairie. Please wear old clothes and
boots.
Nature Tales- Summer Camp- 9:30AM-12:00PM (please arrive by 9:00AM)
Please contact me today if you would like to assist with any of the
following camp days.
Monday, June 22nd- Spend the day hiking with the campers.
Tuesday, June 23rd- Topic for the day will be MUD!
Wednesday, June 24th- campers will spend the day exploring Bugs
Thursday, June 25th- Fishing at the City Park pond
Friday, June 26th- Give a helping hand as the campers will explore
Dandelions
Wednesday, June 24th- Fishing Poles- 2PM
Do you enjoy fishing? Come and help set up all the fishing poles and
sort the tackle boxes for this week’s summer camp. Please let me
know if you can help.
Thursday, June 25th- Task Force- 9AM
Please join us at Routzong parking lot as our goal for the day will be
to replant/ mulch around the trees for tomorrow. Please bring a
shovel with you and let Laura know if you can help.
Monday, June 29th- Wednesday, July 1st Growing Pizza- Summer Camp –
10a-12p
Assist the campers in learning all about gardening and growing
vegetables. Each camp day will be focused on a different aspect
of gardening. We are also looking for volunteers to donate
produce for the pizza making. Contact Laura for more details.
Upcoming Events:
Volunteer Appreciation & Concert- July 18th -5PM
Calling
all Park Volunteers! Join us this evening as we say, “thank
you” for everything you have done for the Park District. We will wrap
up the evening with the Higgins Madewell summer Concert. Please RSVP to
Laura by July 15th if you are able to
attend.
