“Saving Seeds”
Program at Library
Janell Weiss says the time to start saving seeds correctly is when you
plant them in the spring! To stay true-to-type they must be
separated by distance so they aren’t mixed - she can tell you how to do
this for various crops with different techniques for tomatoes, green
beans etc.
Come to her free workshop at the Greenville Public Library on Thursday
May 21st at 6:30! She’ll give a Power Point presentation
and distribute printed materials. Her goal is to make sure the seeds
you borrow from the Seed Library produce true-to-type from heirloom and
open-pollinated seeds that can be used next year.
She is currently with the Darke County Soil & Water District and
has a Masters Degree in Water Resources Engineering from Virginia
Tech. Her experience in farming, food nutrients, soil health, and
water quality is impressive. Currently her job is to investigate
complaints against livestock producers. She also helps with the
City of Greenville Storm Water Program.
Her main tools are education and outreach so that pollution issues can
be resolved and that farmers are compliant with applying fertilizers -
with the goal to make sure that what they’re doing is beneficial
financially and environmentally. She does a lot of
workshops.
Janell grew up in Versailles and was active in 4H. She spent time
in the Peace Corp in Panama and Central America - part of a team of
cyclists who went from village to village teaching gardening. As
an undergrad at OSU she studied a year at the Monterey Institute of
Technology in Mexico and later worked at Green Eagle Gardens, an
organic farm in Athens Ohio.
She has much to teach and will also do a class in June on natural pest
control. Expect a delightful evening. Light
refreshments will be served.
