Library's October’s Film… Cat People

In October the Greenville Public Library's “Third Floor Film Series” will be screening the suspenseful 1942 horror film Cat People. Librarian David Nilsen says ”As the autumn leaves fly around in the chilly darkness outside, attendees will watch a film that helped to elevate the horror genre from b-picture status to artistic legitimacy.

“Directed by Jacques Tourneur, the film tells the story of a young woman (French actress Simone Simon) living in New York City. She falls in love with a man and agrees to marry him, but on their wedding night refuses to sleep with him. She tells him a legend about the Serbian village she is from, a legend about a curse that turns the women of her village into vicious wild cats when they are upset or aroused. Because she loves him, she refuses to consummate the marriage, fearing what will happen. Time passes, and her husband strays.

“Myth and reality blur and blood is shed. The film blends the genres of film noir and horror, layering the visual style and mood of noir over top the fantastical and haunting narrative elements of a horror movie. It works both as light entertainment and a delicate commentary on female repression.

“Please make plans to join us on Thursday, October 15, at 7:00 p.m. as we screen this moody and intriguing film. Coffee, soft drinks, candy, and popcorn will be available free of charge, and I will be leading a brief discussion after the film. I look forward to seeing you there.”
