Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund
Biddlestones, Abneys and others support SSSF

Donations in preparation for the Seniors Scribes Scholarship Fund annual banquet and scholarship presentations were presented April 2 at Shawnee Prairie in Greenville. Darrell and Debbie Biddlestone, the first sponsors to support SSSF with an annual donation five years ago, presented their check to SSSF directors Kathleen DeLand, Gary Young and Al Greiner.

Also presenting their donations on April 2 were Al and Barbara Greiner and County News Online. Long-time supporters of the scholarship fund, Ted and Diana Abney, presented their scholarship donation earlier in March.

SSSF President Elaine Bailey noted her gratitude to the donors for their generosity. “The Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund program is blessed to have the Biddlestones and the Abneys as devoted sponsors,” she said. “They are thankful for what they have and are gracious in financially supporting the educational goals of our community’s youth, so these young people, in turn, can assist and encourage a future generation.”

Biddlestone’s donations are in memory of Ralph (Fred) and Donna Wright. “Fred was my mentor when I was just starting out in business,” Biddlestone said. SSSF and the Biddlestones began the tradition of presenting the donations at Shawnee Prairie while Donna volunteered there before she passed away.

Competition for the $1,000 scholarships gets greater each year. This year eight scholarships will be awarded to students with superior academic and community service accomplishments. The Biddlestone Memorial Scholarship will go to Hannah Coakley, Greenville High School. Greenville High School’s Will McCabe and Seryn Crawford will receive the Al and Barbara Greiner scholarships, and Ansonia High School’s Bryant Fox will receive the Bistro Off Broadway scholarship.

Senior Scribes and CNO scholarships typically focus on students pursuing careers with a communications focus. This year’s SSSF scholarships will go to Olivia Herron and Nicole Manges, Greenville High School, and Brooke Robinson, Versailles High School.  The County News Online scholarship goes to Brittany Ulman, Ansonia High School.

Through the generosity of its sponsors SSSF has given over $64,000 in scholarships. SSSF Directors are Elaine Bailey, president, Gary Young, vice president, Jan Boyer, secretary, Al Greiner, treasurer, Kathleen DeLand, Deb Shiverdecker, Al Bliss, and Hershel Fee.
