Greenville City School District
Family Reading Night
By Laura Bemus
Assistant Superintendent

Thursday, May 12th is an important date for our students and families of incoming 1st – 3rd graders!  From 5:00 – 7:00 PM we are hosting a Family Reading Night event at Memorial Hall. This event is truly a community event with many community members and Greenville City School staff members helping to make the event memorable.

Students and families have registered for the Kids Read Now program and during the Family Reading Night, they will receive their first three books for the summer, have dinner, see a poet (5:00 and 6:00), learn more about summer reading incentives and the Kids Read Now program, and win door prizes. Incoming Kindergarten students will receive their books and information at Kindergarten screening.

Kids Read Now is a researched-based program that combines technology, parent engagement, student choice and school partnerships to help kids succeed as readers.  The program partners with school districts to give students in kindergarten through third grade new books of their choice that will motivate them to keep reading during the summer months.  Each book includes a comprehensive activity sheet, and weekly communication using One Call Now. Every week students read one book, and then they earn their next book.  Books arrive in the mail.  Students receive pre and post program testing; using MAP in their classrooms and then data is analyzed by Kids Read Now to determine each student’s reading progress.  The books and services of Kids Read Now are paid with grant funds.

During the event on May 12th there will be many door prizes given for those attending.  Those include: Cincinnati Reds 2 lower level tickets or 4 upper seating tickets, Darke County YMCA-6 week membership, Columbus Crew- tickets, Jumpy’s 5 laser tag and 5 jump passes, Scene 75-20 arcade plays, Charlie Hoce – Authors book, Cincinnati Zoo- tickets, Maid –Rite- Gift Certificates.  Generous donations make these door prizes available for families to win.  Also, when students register they will be given a bookmark to take to a local business over the summer to receive a reward for showing their book.

We are so grateful for the work of Woodland’s PTA, Woodland’s Watch DOGS (Dads of great students), and local businesses: Dairy Barn, Rural King, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Walmart, Dairy King, Pizza Hut, Hallmark, Darke County YMCA, Greenville’s City Park,  Eikenberry’s IGA for their donations to make this event possible for the children in Greenville.
