Milkweed Pod Collection is Underway
People from all different backgrounds have come together to help in the
plight of the Monarch Butterfly. As you may have heard the Monarch
Butterfly numbers have been on the decline for a number of years.
One plant that impacts the Monarch butterfly’s survival is the common
Milkweed plant. The Monarch Butterfly pretty much relies on the
Milkweed plant for the majority of its lifecycle. The Ohio Department
of Natural Resources many agencies are trying to get the word out; they
are collecting common Milkweed Pods. These pods should be collected
between September 1st through October 31st. The seed pods must be dry
and turning a golden yellow to a grayish brown color for the seed to be
mature. Try to collect them before they open up because insects could
infest them and damage the seed.
There is a bin provided by Rumpke at the south end of the Darke Soil
and Water Conservation office for those individuals or groups wishing
to deposit the seed pods. Please put the pods into a breathable paper
bag and not plastic. If you would like more information please don’t
hesitate to contact the Darke S.W.C.D. at 937-548-1752.You may also
