Ohio author to
speak on his Ohio “Ripley-style” books
'Ohio Legends Books 1 & 2', written by Jeff Wilson, are a
collection of single page graphics based stories patterned after
'Ripley's Believe It or Not' that feature only Ohio-centric subjects.
The idea is to introduce reluctant readers, kids and young adults to
Ohio's amazing history and people. Each page features a different story
and illustration about Ohio celebrities, little known facts, inventors,
heroes and visionaries. Wilson illustrated each page with a cartoon
like line drawing, and included short concise copy to keep the project
brief, so the reader can easily digest the material.
Wilson will be giving a brief talk, PowerPoint and signing books
afterwards at the Lowell Thomas Meeting Room at the Garst Museum 205
North Broadway in Greenville, OH. The program, presented by the Darke
County Genealogical Society will be at 2 PM on April 8th. A
portion of the proceeds of the book sales will go to help support the
Darke County Genealogical Society.
Wilson is a lifelong resident of the Buckeye state. He attended Wayne
High School in Huber Heights, and went on to study commercial art at
the Montgomery County Joint Vocational School, now called (M.V.C.T.C.).
Wilson and his wife Patti have owned and operated a small sign shop in
Vandalia, Ohio for about 30 years, and have learned to wear many hats,
from commercial design, installation, and advertising art geared
specifically to small businesses. Diverse experience in commercial art
extends to the ‘fine art’ field and over the years the couple has sold
many paintings, portraits, and artwork.
Wilson’s specialty is ‘line art’ or cartoons. His editorial cartoons
have appeared in the Dayton Business Reporter, with weekly portraits of
local business people in their ‘Bio’ section, many local newspapers,
and magazines. Recently WPTD Channel 16 in Dayton, aired a short piece
on Wilson and the ‘Ohio Legends’ books in their ‘Studio Insider’
segment on their Art Show program.
‘Ohio Legends Books’ were originally a project aimed at weekly
newspapers as a single panel cartoon featuring local history, a
favorite subject of the author. The cartoon featured a
Ripley’s-Believe-It-Or-Not format that focused only on Ohio. As the
amount of material grew, Wilson shared the stories on Facebook, and
soon family and friends were sending him their own trivia, fun facts,
and stories of remarkable Ohioans. Today there are close to 300 pages
of the Buckeye state’s rich and diverse history in two volumes.
‘Ohio Legends Books’ are available on-line at Amazon.com and many
museum gift shops across the state.
