Greenville Public Library
Babette’s
Feast at Third Floor Film Series
The Greenville Public Library's Third Floor Film Series will screen the
1987 Danish film Babette's Feast in May. The film was directed by
Gabriel Axel and was based on a story written by Isak Dinesen, the pen
name of author Karen Blixen (Out of Africa).
The film is set entirely in a remote village on the coast of northern
Denmark in the 19th century. Two elderly sisters—the daughters of the
deceased pastor who founded the small parish—serve as the aging and
isolated community's de facto leaders. They are surprised one day when
a refugee fleeing violence in Paris arrives at their door asking only
for a place to stay in return for housework and cooking. Babette
(Stèphane Audran) works for them for many years, but when she wins a
lottery in her native France, the sisters assume she will be leaving.
Instead, she prepares a feast for the townsfolk, whose austere
strictures threaten to prevent their enjoyment of her gift.
Join us on Tuesday May 7 at 6:30 p.m. as we screen Babette's Feast. The
film is rated G with a running time of 102 minutes. Free popcorn,
candy, and soft drinks will be provided, and I will lead a brief
discussion after the film. We hope to see you there!
