Remembering
the best there was
By
Don McDermott
Former
Sports Editor, Daily Advocate
September
23, 1993 is the signature day in Gene Riegle's life as a harness
racing Hall of Fame trainer, driver and owner. It was the day Life
Sign, a
3-year-old colt driven by another Hall of Famer, John Campbell, won the
Little
Brown Jug, one of pacing's prestigious Triple Crown events at the
Delaware
County Fairgrounds in rural central Ohio. The win by Life Sign, in a
down-to-the-wire dual with Riyadh, ended three years marked by dreams
shattered
and...

A different perspective on the
Greenville Fire
Department issue
Editing
and Comments by Bob Robinson
One
of the things I love about an online news and information service is
it is not limited to a regimented format. I received a letter from a
reader
regarding the City of Greenville Fire Department issue. After reading
it I felt
it deserved more prominence than that of a letter to the editor. It was
sent
prior to Bob Rhoades’ column being posted, so it was not in response to
his...

Connecting
Veterans with New Employment Opportunities
Ohio
is home to more than 890,000 veterans,
making our state the nation’s sixth-largest population of
veterans. Despite
their service, an unacceptably high number of veterans struggle to find
work.
Just as we invest in our service members while they’re on the
battlefield, we
should do the same when they return home. That’s why it’s
imperative that
we do a better job of connecting veterans with the support resources
they
deserve. Among them is the Veterans ...

Cheers Craig As A Tow Truck Pulls Him to Victory Lane
ROSSBURG,
OH (Aug. 11) – Barney Craig’s victory
lap, following his sixth Stock Car feature win of the season, was
likely his
most unforgettable. The rear end of Craig’s No. 71C gave out after
racing
through the final turn; but the division points leader had enough of a
lead to
coast across the finish line for the...

17 PERCENT FEEL THEY CAN "HAVE IT ALL"
|
Dayton
Business Journal…
Poll:
Work-life balance not reality for most
by
Joe Cogliano
A
majority of
Dayton-area workers have little faith that they can rise up the
corporate
ladder while giving enough attention to their home life. In a new
Dayton
Business Journal poll, 33 percent said it is not possible to balance
work and
family in today's Corporate America. And another 45 percent said the
balance
was possible, but only if a person lets...

Innovative
thinking can fund our infrastructure
by
Ellen van der Horst
Just
as innovation leads to improvements in the
way we do business, innovative thinking can also lead to improvements
in the
way we fund infrastructure. And the need for innovative thinking is
more
important now than ever. Investment in transportation
infrastructure is critical to the growth of our economy. It impacts the
very...

DARKE COUNTY FAIR COUNTDOWN... 2 DAYS TO GO
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15,
2012 |
Former
Sports Editor Don McDermott comments on his memories of Don Riegle, the
famed harness horse owner, trainer and driver. Riegle passed away last
fall and will be honored this year at the Darke County Fair's Harness
Horse Racing. The concern over possible City layoffs grows.
Today a local resident notes large cities with volunteer forces;
tomorrow Bob Rhoades will be noting Vicious Cycle Part 2. In
Obituaries: Eugene W. Lindamood and Lisa Ann Metzcar.
