The freedom to choose dependency
By Bob Robinson

that I’ve gotten older. I’m not nearly as nasty as I used to be… you
know, the “furiner and snake in the grass” syndrome? “You weren’t
nasty,” one gentleman... Read More. More Opinion. |

What the Top 1% of Earners Majored In
By Robert Gebeloff and Shaila Dewan, New York Times
We got an interesting question from an academic adviser at a Texas
university: could we tell what the top 1 percent of earners majored in?
The writer, sly dog, was probably trying to make a point, because he
wrote from a biology department, and it turns out that biology majors
make up... Read More. More Community. |

A few words in defense of negative campaigning
by Michael Barone
Those who take a certain pleasure in denouncing the evils negative
political advertising should have spent the last week in South
Carolina. They could have plunked down in front of TV sets, especially
during morning, early evening and late evening news programs, and by
adroit use of the remote control seen one negative spot after another.
They could have... Read

THE EDITOR... ON THE INSIDE - TODAY IS MONDAY, JANUARY 30,

Take
a look around you. Chances are that in any group, half of those present
will be on some kind of government subsidy. For what it’s worth, that
includes me: Social Security and Medicare. I once asked some students
if they thought government was too big. They said yes. Problem: by the
time they’re old enough to do something about it, it may be too late to
turn it around. We have the freedom to choose. So far, we’ve chosen
dependency. Also in News: New voucher effort serves special-needs students. Events: Garst Museum Volunteers to speak before BPW Club. Blogs: Unstated. Obituaries: Gale E. Baker. For
