GREENVILLE – U.S. Representative (Dist. 8) and Speaker of the House
John Boehner was in Greenville at Rebsco, Inc. Monday to talk to
selected local business owners and the media about the challenges being
faced with the Obama economy.
See links below for the Politico report, and the ABC News report, also
supplied by Politico. The focus of the ABC story was gas prices and
subsidies to the oil industry. The focus of the Politico story was the
debt limit and the circumstances under which a vote on it might not
happen.
Locally, Boehner told County News Online that Darke County, as well as
the rest of District 8, needs to understand that they are part of the
national economy… actually a world economy.
“We are doing well in agriculture – a major part of this economy – and
I believe that will continue,” he said.
“We are all tied to the same economy,” he said. He added that for the
economic picture to improve here, issues need to be addressed in
Washington.
“We need to take away the threat of the government juggernaut that can
hurt business growth in this area. We need to pass the free trade
legislation” that can positively impact both agriculture and
manufacturing in this area, he added.
He said we must, as Americans, deal with the debt crisis we are in.
“Obama wants an increase in the Credit Card limit,” Boehner said. “It’s
time to cut the credit card.”
Boehner added that rather than passing a balanced budget amendment, we
have to pass real spending cuts, control discretionary spending.
“We have to deal with entitlements like Medicare and Social Security,”
he said. “No tax increase is part of this plan.”
Did he “sell out” as some conservative critics have suggested? Boehner
grinned… it was a rueful grin, indicative of the number of times he may
have dealt with that question. CNO notes here that Republicans control
one-third of the government; Democrats still control the other
two-thirds.
“By 10:30 on Friday night I’d done everything I could. Sticking to your
guns pays off. We got 79 percent of what we wanted.” He added it was
also a huge decrease in the spending Obama wanted in his budget.
Boehner said shutting down the government, as many wanted, was not an
option.
“The government shuts down? That only costs more money. The goal is to
reduce spending, not add more.
“The greatest danger we face as Americans is to do nothing,” he said.
Boehner’s visit to Rebsco was part of his tour of District 8. He had
already been to Hamilton, Ohio and left Greenville to head to Mercer
County, then to Miami County before heading back to Washington.
