By Jake Sherman
4/16/11
Boehner’s office in Washington did not provide more details about the
trip.
House Speaker John Boehner was in Iraq on Saturday and met with the
country’s top officials, Agence France-Presse reported from Baghdad.
The Ohio Republican met with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and U.S.
Ambassador James Jeffrey.
Boehner, in a statement released by his office, said, “Just four years
ago, a terrorist insurgency was killing innocent civilians and wreaking
havoc across the country. Today, Iraq is a different country.”
“By taking the fight to al-Qaeda, the insurgency, and other terrorist
threats, our men and women in uniform succeeded in providing greater
security to the Iraqi population and giving the government the time to
build capacity to more effectively meet the needs of the Iraqi people,”
he said in a statement.
On the trip with Boehner are Republican Reps. Mac Thornberry and Mike
Conaway of Texas, Tom Rooney of Florida, and Joe Heck of Nevada, as
well as Democratic Rep. Dan Boren of Oklahoma.
The Ohio Republican is fresh off a two-week battle with the White House
and Senate Democrats over the federal budget.
