in first quarter

WASHINGTON – House Speaker John Boehner raised more than $1.5 million
during the first three months of this year, giving his congressional
campaign bank account $1.92 million to spend next year.
In documents filed with the Federal Elections Commission, Boehner,
R-West Chester Twp., and Republicans Mike Turner of Centerville, Steve
Austria of Beavercreek, and Jim Jordan of Urbana have already amassed
deep campaign treasuries. All four easily won re-election last November.
Boehner’s huge haul of campaign cash during his first three months as
speaker of the House will allow him to not only finance his own
re-election campaign, but also to donate money to Republican campaign
efforts. Boehner also raises money through his own political action
committee, which will file its latest monthly report in the next two
weeks.
In addition to receiving money from individual donors, Boehner also
collected more than $400,000 from political action committees operated
by major companies.
That included $10,000 from Comcast, Anheuser-Busch and Exxon-Mobil, and
$5,000 apiece from American Electric Power of Columbus, American
Express, American Airlines, Credit Suisse Securities, Microsoft, and
Eli Lilly.
Boehner also collected $2,500 from Cox Enterprises, which owns the
Dayton Daily News. Cox, through its PAC, has donated money to
candidates from both political parties.
Candidates for the House and Senate were required to file by Friday
their first-quarter reports with the FEC.
Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who is expected to face a difficult
re-election campaign next year, raised $1.3 million during the first
quarter to give him $2.5 million in his campaign account.
By contrast, Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who does not run again until
2016, raised just $3,500 during the first quarter. But he still has
$1.4 million in the bank.
Turner has more than $126,000 available to spend on next year’s
re-election campaign as he raised $71,630 during the first three months
of this year.
Turner collected $1,500 from Daniel Schiavone, president of the Design
Knowledge Co. in Dayton, and $2,500 apiece from Jared Barnett,
president of the Mills-Morgan Development Co. in Dayton; Jeff
Samuelson, owner of the JZ Company in Cincinnati; and Larry Dosser,
president of Mound Laser & Photonics Center in Dayton.
In addition, Turner received $4,900 from William Bailey, vice president
of Radiance Technologies in Alabama.
Austria reported having $168,145 in the bank, having collected $30,570
during the first quarter of this year. Jordan, who has emerged as a
leading conservative often at odds on budget issues with Boehner, has
$824,052 in his campaign account after raising just under $83,000 in
the first quarter.
