Midwest employers say
top talent scarce
Wednesday, April 6, 2011
A Manpower survey reveals that many Midwestern companies find it hard
to find top talent to hire when having job openings.
Recovery may be slowed by shortage of skilled workers
Executives at roughly one out of every five companies in the Midwest
say they “often find it difficult to fill key positions,” a Right
Management survey found.
The survey of 700 companies across the United States and 158 in the
Midwest also shows that 64 percent of Midwest employers “occasionally
find it hard to fill key positions,” according to the talent and career
management branch of Milwaukee-based Manpower Inc. (NYSE: MAN), which
is the Dayton region’s largest staffing firm.
Only 14 percent said “We seldom, if ever, find it hard.”
Mary Haskins, Right Management’s career management practice leader for
the Midwestern region, said in a press release that finding top talent
is difficult regardless of economic conditions.
“HR professionals know that whether it’s a weak or strong job market,
finding and recruiting certain key people is a demanding process,” she
said in the release. “Moreover, the difficulty varies according to job
level, industry, requisite skills among other things.”
Promoting qualified internal candidates has proven especially hard for
employers, survey findings suggest.
Only 3 percent of Midwest firms said, “We have an ample leadership
pipeline that will cover most of our needs.” About 73 percent said they
rely on a combination of internal talent development and external
hiring, while 24 percent said looking outside for critical roles is
routine.
