Big
banks start charging debit card
fees
Thursday, August 18, 2011
Bank
customers who use debit cards at
some of the top banks in the country will have to start paying a fee to
use
their cards soon, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.
Wells
Fargo & Co. will charge
customers in four states a $3 per month fee to use their debit cards
starting
Oct. 14. The Journal also reported that JPMorgan Chase & Co.
has been
testing fees, as well as Regions Financial Corp. and SunTrust Banks Inc.
The
country’s biggest financial firm,
Bank of America , is considering adding fees, The Journal reported.
Wells,
JPMorgan and BofA have
operations in the Dayton region.
The
new charges follow new rules by
Federal Reserve, which last month capped the “swipe fees” that banks
can charge
retailers. Banks had protested the new rules and some had predicted
that other
fees might go up.
