Darke County Sheriff's Office...
Stand-off near New Madison ends without injury
On August 22, 2011 at approximately 4 p.m the Darke County Sheriff's
Office received a 911 hang-up call from 3563 Vietor Road southwest of
Greenville, Ohio.
Upon calling back the number the Dispatcher received an open line in
which she determined a domestic dispute was taking place and the female
caller was unable to communicate because her spouse was armed with a
gun and threatening suicide.
Darke County Deputies were dispatched to the scene. The female was able
to leave the residence without injury as deputies arrived on the scene.
Deputies attempted to make contact with 50 year old Gerald "Arlin" Alderman. Alderman refused to communicate or leave the house.
The Darke County Special Response Team, Randolph County, IN Special Response Team and Tri-Village Rescue responded to the scene.
Negotiators attempted to communicate with Alderman several times but he
continued to refuse all contact. Deputies observed Alderman walking
around inside the house armed with a firearm.
At approximately 1 a.m. Alderman started communication with negotiators
and voluntarily surrendered to deputies outside his home without
further incident. Alderman was transported to Wayne Health Care in
Greenville for a mental health and medical evaluation.
The stand-off lasted over nine hours and concluded with no injuries to
the subject or officers. Two neighboring homes near the incident were
evacuated or affected for the duration of the incident. The subject
displayed a firearm to officers several times but no shots were fired.
The facts of this case will be submitted to the Darke County
Prosecutor's Office for review and determination if criminal charges
will be filed.
