Lady Wave out-hustled
in soccer loss
By George Starks
GREENVILLE - “It just wasn’t our day.”
Those were the words of Lady Wave soccer coach Pete Ziehler after the
Lady Wave fell to Brookville Monday, 9-1, in a home soccer scrimmage.
“We’ve played better,” Ziehler added. “I’m not disappointed in the
least with the girls. A couple of goals shouldn’t have happened but
they did. We’ve played this team before and beat them.”
The lone goal for the Wave came on a penalty kick off the foot of
junior Aubry DeVoss with 3:03 remaining.
“Every little aspect of the game of soccer has to be worked on,” said
Ziehler. “Tonight, out lone goal came off a penalty kick from our best
finisher. There are a lot of things we need to tighten up on and we are
going to get better. We are coming off a good season last year and the
GWOC is aware of us this year. Like I said, this was a scrimmage and
it’s out of my mind except for the things we need to work on.”
In a 9-1 loss, many things could be seen that need improvement.
Ziehler pointed out the top three.
“We need to work a little bit more on conditioning,” Ziehler said. “We
are low on numbers and at times it could fatigue us. It’s not that our
girls are going to be outplayed right now but come October, it’s going
to be tough when it gets colder and we start cramping up.
“We need to work on marking but that is with any team. The best team in
the state will have to work on marking at this point of the season. The
third thing is we have to learn to adjust to new positions. We had a
couple of injuries that will change the focus of the season so we will
have some people in different positions. We lost six seniors last year
so we are a young team. Half of our team is under-classmen, so we will
be all right.”
The Wave will travel to Miami East on Wednesday to battle the Vikings
in another scrimmage.
