Dayton Chamber backs
Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s jobs plan
Thursday, February 10, 2011
The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce is endorsing Governor John Kasich’s
JobsOhio bill, Ohio House Bill 1, which is designed to privatize
economic development.
The chamber threw its support behind the bill Wednesday, citing the
need for the state to be able to move quickly when companies need
support to grow.
“HB 1 allows Ohio to start moving at the speed of business,” said Phil
Parker, president and chief executive officer of the chamber, in a
statement. “As HB 1 is being considered in the legislature, businesses
are making decisions on where to move and grow their operations. We
need to be at the table for these decisions … we needed to be at the
table yesterday.”
In the bill, Kasich said he will replace Ohio’s government-run economic
development functions with a nonprofit that would report to the
governor to lead the state’s economic development efforts. He said the
new economic development entity would be:
• More responsive as a private corporation;
• Have increased accountability; and
• Have more business experience as the nonprofit — JobsOhio — would be
governed by a board of directors comprised of industry experts and
current or former CEOs.
House Bill 1 mirrors the recommendations for charter agencies outlined
by the Ohio metro chambers of commerce in a recently released report,
Redesigning Ohio.
Kasich will be speaking about House Bill 1 to the Dayton Area Chamber
of Commerce Board of Trustees on Feb. 16.
