Horse track plan may
bring 1,500 jobs to Dayton
Beulah Park horse track in Columbus may relocate to a former Delphi
plant in Dayton.

Penn National Gaming Inc. is looking to transform a former Delphi plant
in north Dayton into a $200 million horsetrack and slot machine complex.
The Dayton Business Journal has learned the project would entail
relocating Beulah Park horse track in Columbus to the old Delphi
facility at Needmore and Wagner Ford roads in Dayton. Penn’s (Nasdaq:
PENN) complex would include a one-mile horse track, sports bar,
restaurants and large slot machine area.
In total, officials expect the track and gaming center to create 1,500
direct and indirect jobs in the Dayton region, with 1,000 construction
jobs.
However, the massive project is contingent on Ohio approval of video
lottery terminals.
Penn is expected to go before the Ohio Racing Commission in Columbus
Thursday morning.
Penn is the operator of two Ohio casinos in Columbus and Toledo. Voters
approved a casino initiative in 2009 that allowed four Ohio casinos to
be created. Cincinnati and Cleveland also are in the process of getting
casinos.
Since Penn also operates horse tracks, it made sense to move the
Columbus track to Dayton, which is not getting a casino. Penn also is
looking to relocate a Toledo horse track to Youngstown.
