Mitch McConnell: The
Obama agenda is ‘over’
By Shira Toeplitz
2/13/11
“The legislative agenda of Barack Obama is over,” said McConnell to his
party’s faithful in Louisville, Ky., according to the Associated Press.
McConnell cautioned that he and his GOP colleagues are willing to do
what they “think is right for America,” including working with the
president, but he also tossed a hefty dose of partisan meat to the
crowd, accusing Obama of doing “Clintonian back-flips” to present
himself as a moderate.
Since the GOP made major gains in November’s midterm elections, Senate
Republicans have cooperated with the White House on select issues, most
notably the Bush-era tax cuts, which they agreed to extend for another
two years, along with jobless benefits that the administration had
sought.
It wasn’t new territory for McConnell, who said in an interview last
year that his No. 1 goal is to make Obama a one-term president. During
his Saturday night speech at the Lincoln Days Dinner, McConnell said
the president’s track record on spending and debt is “horrible.”
But McConnell conceded that congressional Republicans - who took
control of the House and increased their numbers in the Senate in last
year’s election - are “prepared to do business” with Obama when it is
“right for America.”
“We won’t say ‘no’ simply because there’s an election coming along,”
said McConnell.
