Darke County Calamity Days

“We’re all hoping that school will be out by July 4!” … Comments noted
during CNO’s survey on “Calamity Days.”
A calamity is defined as “a state of deep distress or misery caused by
misfortune or loss.” That picture describes what happens when we have
snow and ice on the roads so that the school busses cannot safely
transport students to school. That’s why they’re called “calamity days.”
And we’ve had a bunch, ranging from eight to 10, depending on the
school district. Current law only allows for three days, with the
remainder to be “made up” by the District. Legislation is under
consideration to change the number allowed to five, retroactive to
include this year. However, this has not yet been passed.
Greenville, along with four other Darke County Districts, had 10
“calamity” days. Greenville City Schools reported that the seven days
to be made up will be March 25 and 28 (no spring break), and April 21
(the day prior to Good Friday). The other days – June 3 and June 6 thru
8 – were tacked onto the end of the year. The last day of school for
seniors is June 3, with graduation on June 4.
Mississinawa Valley, as anticipated due to its E-Day Initiative, ended
up with only three days to make up. The district was closed eight days
due to weather concerns. Three are allowed by the state and two were
made up with E-Day lessons, the maximum allowed under the initiative.
The remaining three will be made up on Feb. 18 and April 20 and 21.
The E-Day Initiative allows students to complete the electronic lessons
on their own time or during study hall. That is how the district is
able to count the days. Teachers also spend extra time preparing,
managing, and evaluating the students' work.
In the event there are additional snow days, MV’s make up will be on
March 21, then tagged onto the end of the year.
The following is a partial list for make-up days for the remaining
Darke County districts.
Ansonia had nine calamity days; make-up - Feb. 15 and April 25 for two
of them.
Arcanum-Butler had 10; make-up - Feb. 21 (President’s Day) and April 26.
Bradford had 10; make-up - Feb. 18 and Feb. 21.
Versailles had nine; picked President’s Day, Feb. 21.
Franklin-Monroe; with 10 calamity days, picked Feb. 18 as one of its
make-up days.
Tri-Village had 10, but make-up information was not available.
Days not made up during the regular school year must be added to the
end of the year.
If Ohio law changes to extend the number of calamity days to five, then
all schedules will be modified.
