Tax reform on deck in
the House
By Richard E. Cohen
Jan. 14, 2011 - Tax reform is on deck in the House, with hearings
planned for next week in the Ways and Means Committee.
Chairman Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.) announced late Thursday that he will
hold the first in a set of hearings on “fundamental” tax reform next
Thursday.
“With nine out of 10 families either hiring tax preparers or purchasing
tax software in order to file their taxes, it is clear that the tax
code is too complex, too time-consuming and too costly for our families
and businesses,” Camp said. “It’s this committee’s responsibility to
examine ways to reform the code so that it won’t be a continued barrier
to economic growth and job creation.”
Camp got the okay from the committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Sander Levin
(D-Mich.), to waive a House rule requiring notice.
President Obama offered some encouragement last month during an
interview with National Public Radio, when he called for simplifying
the tax code by “eliminating loopholes, eliminating deductions,
eliminating exemptions in certain categories.”
But Republicans want a more definitive signal of Obama’s plans, perhaps
as soon as his scheduled Jan. 25 State of the Union message. As was
shown on the 1986 Tax Reform Act, the complex task requires strong
commitment of both the president and congressional leaders.
