Muncie,
Delaware County Take Step
Toward Consolidation
City, County Officials Vote
Unanimously For Merger
June 15, 2011
MUNCIE,
Ind. -- Delaware County and
Muncie took a big step Tuesday night toward consolidation.
City
and county officials voted
unanimously in favor of the merger. The bill would eliminate the mayor
and
county commissioners, along with both councils.
They
would be replaced by a city
council and an elected county executive.
“In
this day and age, I don’t think
that this county of 114,000 people needs 20 people in executive and
legislative
positions running this size of a county,” said Muncie City Councilor
Linda
Gregory.
Voters
will decide the fate of the
proposal in a referendum in 2012. It will require 66 percent approval
to move
forward.
The
reorganization effort began in
2008, when more than 2,200 people signed a petition requesting local
government
to consolidate.
