Honda, Toyota top
‘American-made’ cars list
Monday, June 27, 2011
Two Japanese automakers’ flagship sedans – the Toyota Camry and Honda
Accord – have the most credibility for claiming Made in the U.S.A.,
according to an annual ranking.
The Web site Cars.com said the Camry held on to the top spot for the
third year in a row in its American Made Index, which ranks vehicles
based on the percentage of parts that are made domestically, where they
are assembled and how many are sold to U.S. buyers. The Camry is
assembled in Georgetown, Ky., and Lafayette, Ind.
The No. 2 spot on the list was Honda Motor Co. ‘s Accord, made
primarily in Honda of America Manufacturing Inc.’s North American
headquarters in Marysville. The Honda Odyssey minivan, made in Lincoln,
Ala., was No. 5 on the list.
Toyota Motor Corp. , which has operations in the Dayton region, also
put its Tundra pickup truck (No. 9) and Sienna minivan (No. 6) on the
list, matching General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM) for the most vehicles
among Cars.com’s top 10.
Ford Motor Co. ‘s Explorer model was Ford’s only vehicle on the list.
“In today’s global economy, there’s not an easy way to determine just
how American a car is,” Patrick Olsen, Cars.com’s editor in chief, said
in a news release. “Most cars built in the U.S., for example, are
assembled using at least some parts that come from somewhere else.
Additionally, many U.S. automakers assemble vehicles in Canada and
Mexico, while foreign automakers have opened plants on U.S. soil.”
