climbs, first bump in 20 months

Ohio’s unemployment rate increased in June for the first time in nearly
two years to hit 8.8 percent, the state Department of Job and Family
Services reported Friday.
The state’s unemployment rate grew from 8.6 percent in May. The jobless
rate has fallen or held steady since September 2009, when unemployment
stood at 10.6 percent.
The increase in the jobless rate came as nonfarm payroll grew by 10,600
jobs to 5.1 million from 5.09 million in May, a downwardly revised
tally. The ranks of those out of work and actively seeking a job grew
by 9,000 to hit 517,000, the department said.
The 4.3 million-worker service sector in Ohio reported a net 10,900 job
gains last month, driven by increased employment in the leisure and
hospitality trades. Government payroll dropped by 7,300 jobs in June.
The goods-producing sector, meanwhile, reported a net loss of 300 jobs
as a pickup in construction employment was offset by 3,000 job losses
in the manufacturing sector.
With last month’s increase, Ohio’s unemployment rate hovers less than
half a percentage point below the national unemployment rate of 9.2
percent.
County and city unemployment data are set to be released Tuesday.
Statewide figures for July will follow Aug. 19.
In the most recent figures, the Dayton region’s jobless rate rose to
9.3 percent in May, up from 9 percent the previous month.
However, the region’s jobless rate may be getting upcoming boosts as
several notable employers are hiring.
GE Aviation, a division of General Electric Co. , looks to hire 10 to
15 workers immediately and as many as 200 people eventually for its
115,000-square-foot Electrical Power Integrated Systems Research and
Development Center — dubbed EPISCENTER — on the University of Dayton ’s
campus on River Park Drive.
Projects Unlimited , a Vandalia-based aerospace electronics company,
plans to hire 20 employees for its new cable and harness division.
Caterpillar Logistics Services Inc., a unit of Caterpillar Inc. , plans
to eventually hire more than 500 people for its 1 million-square-foot
distribution facility in Clayton.
