Three motion picture companies have cut back on-screen smoking
incidents almost 96 percent in films directed toward children and teens
after implementing policies to reduce tobacco use in movies, a recent
study shows.
Overall, the number of tobacco-related incidents in films rated G, PG
and PG-13 declined almost 72 percent in the past five years, but
companies without published policies reduced on-screen smoking only
about 42 percent on average.
Previous studies have shown children and teens are influenced by
exposure to depictions of tobacco use in films, according to the
National Cancer Institute. The recent study said that policies can help
reduce those tobacco incidents and prevent adolescent smoking.
