Apple Inc. previewed major upgrades to its Mac and mobile operating
system, as well the much-anticipated iCloud service, with CEO Steve
Jobs presiding on Monday.
“If the hardware is the brain and the sinew of our products, the
software is their soul. Today we’re going to talk about software,” Jobs
told the crowd at the annual Worldwide Developer Conference in San
Francisco.
Marketing chief Phil Schiller touted some of the 250 new features that
the new Mac operating system, dubbed “Lion,” will feature.
Among them is an autosave feature that stores what a user is working on
in the background, new facial recognition technology and Airdrive — a
way to share documents with users nearby using a Wi-Fi network.
Lion will be available to consumers in July. It will be sold only
through the Mac App store with a $29.99 price tag to upgrade.
Mobile software chief Scott Forstall unveiled some of the 200 changes
coming to the operating system that powers the iPhone and iPad. The new
iOS will be available in the fall.
Among them is an improved camera and Twitter integration. Users will no
longer have to enter their Twitter name and password for each app. The
information will be stored and they will simply be asked which apps
they want to use Twitter with.
Apple has a retail store in Kenwood, as there are two MacTown stores in
the Dayton region.
The company competes against the likes of Google Inc., Microsoft Corp.,
Dell Inc., Hewlett Packard and others.
