U.S. automakers in the next five years are expected to add about 34,000
new hourly and salaried workers nationwide. That is according to a
study by the Center for Automotive Research.
While the report does not break out hourly employment, it said Ford
Motor Co. is planning to add two shifts to its Louisville Assembly
Plant and another 4,700 jobs through 2012.
The report by Ann Arbor, Mich.-based CAR also said General Motors Co.
recently announced plans to add thousands of new manufacturing workers
over the next few years.
GM is investing in its Bowling Green Assembly Plant, where the
Chevrolet Corvette is built. GM also will add about 250 jobs to the
plant.
Although GM shuttered its Moraine Assembly plant in 2008, the Dayton
region remains a hotbed for the automotive industry.West Chester-based
AK Steel Holding sells steel to many of the big automakers. Other
suppliers to the auto industry with area operations include Johnson
Controls Inc. and Lear Corp.
Outside of the domestic automakers, Honda Motor Co., which has its
North American production headquarters in Marysville, has 2,400 workers
at its Anna engine plant, located north of Dayton, and 225 employees in
Troy at a consolidation facility.
Honda also plans to add 1,000 jobs at its plant in Greensburg, Ind.
Overall new car sales are expected to increase this year, which would
be welcome news for GM, Ford, Honda, Toyota Motor Corp., Nissan Motor
Co. and others.
