All military veterans — not just Ohio residents — will get a boost on
civil service examinations under a new state law in the works.
On Thursday, the Ohio House of Representatives unanimously passed House
Bill 162 that eliminates the requirement that veterans be a state
resident to get a special preference, and boost some professional
licensing and certification rights to service members, spouses of
service members and veterans, said State Rep. Jarrod Martin,
R-Beavercreek, in a statement.
Currently, veterans may receive a 20 percent additional credit to their
total grade scored on the regular civil service examination only if
they are also a resident of Ohio.
Martin was a co-sponsor of the bill and serves as chairman of the
Veterans Affairs Committee.
Martin said this hinders former state residents who took up residency
elsewhere when they went into military service and then return to Ohio
to live and work in the civil service sector.
“House Bill 162 will create further opportunities for veterans and
their families so they can comfortably live and work in Ohio,” Martin
said.
The bill now moves to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
Because of its proximity to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base , the
Dayton region is home to thousands of retired military personnel.
