The third quarter could bring more jobs to the Dayton area, according
to a recent survey.
One in every five companies locally plans to hire employees from July
to September, according to The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey by
Manpower Inc.
Seventy-one percent plan to maintain current staffing levels, while 6
percent anticipate staff reductions. The other 4 percent surveyed were
unsure about their hiring plans.
The net employment outlook for the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical
Area, which includes Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble counties, is
13 percent. Net employment outlook is determined by subtracting the
percentage of employers planning to hire employees from the percentage
of employers expecting to cut staff.
During the second quarter, the net employment outlook was 2 percent. In
the third quarter of 2010, the net employment outlook was 10 percent.
The fields in which prospective employees have the greatest chance of
securing a position during the third quarter are: construction,
manufacturing, transportation and utilities, wholesale and retail
trade, professional and business services, leisure and hospitality and
government.
Employers in the education and health services fields expect to cut
staff and employers in the information and financial activities fields
plan to maintain current employment levels.
The Manpower survey reflects the results of a recent Regional Economic
Report from Wright State University. The report called for employment
growth of more than 2,000 workers by the fourth quarter of 2011, with
hiring driven by the manufacturing and defense industries.
Local Manpower survey results mirror national findings.
One in five employers on a national basis plan to up their staffing
levels during the third quarter, while eight percent expect to reduce
staff. Of those surveyed, 69 percent of employers don’t plan to change
their employment levels. Only 3 percent are undecided about their
hiring plans.
The national net employment outlook is 12 percent.
The Dayton region already has seen an uptick in huring recently.
Among the large companies that have been hiring in the Dayton region
during the past year include Science Applications International Corp. ,
General Electric Co., Caterpillar Inc. , Wilmer-Hale , Dayton Freight
Lines Inc. , Premier Health Partners , Kettering Health Network, Kroger

The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey results are based on interviews
with 18,000 U.S. employers in the U.S, which includes the largest 100
MSAs based on number of business establishments. The next Manpower
Employment Outlook Survey will be released Sept. 13.
