loses 6M U.S. users in May

Facebook Inc. reportedly saw U.S. users drop by 6 million during May
and also saw user declines in some European counties. However, Facebook
still saw overall growth during the month, but at a slower rate than
earlier this year.
The Inside Facebook Gold blog reported that while Facebook is still
marching toward 700 million global users, it is taking longer to get
there than expected.
It had been growing by about 20 million users per month until April
when that dropped to 13.9 million and May when it fell to 11.8 million.
The big drop came in the U.S., with about 6 million fewer users in May
for a total of 149.4 million. Canada fell 1.52 million to 16.6 million
and the U.K., Norway and Russia all posted losses of more than 100,000.
Offsetting those losses somewhat are gains in newer Facebook markets
such as Mexico (up 7.6 percent to 25.6 million), Brazil (up 10 percent
to 19 million), India (up 6.7 percent to 26.6 million) and Indonesia
(up 4 percent to 37.9 million).
Inside Facebook Gold bases its numbers on Facebook’s advertiser tools,
counting the number of Facebook users who sign onto the social network
each month.
Facebook ranked as the top Web site in terms of Web visits, according
to a recent report.
Facebook had 10.4 percent of all Web visits for the first week of May,
with Google Inc.coming in just shy of 8 percent. However the report
said Google’s YouTube site had 3.1 percent, which would give Google’s
combined Web presence an 11 percent share of all Web visits and put it
ahead of Facebook by less than one percentage point.
Yahoo Inc. ’s mail service was fourth on the list with 2.9 percent of
all visits, and Yahoo’s main site was fifth with slightly fewer than
2.5 percent. Microsoft Corp. ’s Bing site came in at sixth.
AOL, eBay Inc. and Amazon.com also scored on the list.
In addition to private users, the business community has begun to
embrace social media sites such as Facebook for marketing and
networking. Many Dayton area companies including Premier Health
Partners, Kettering Health Network and Teradata Corp. all have Facebook
pages.
The rise of electronic devices has made posting and reading social
media an instantaneous function. People access social networks via
their smartphones and mobile tablets, such as the Apple Inc. iPhone and
iPad, Research In Motion ’s BlackBerry phones and Google Android
devices. Forty-two percent of Twitter users and 34 percent of Facebook
users visit the site at least once per day using their smartphone,
according to a recent survey.
And more gadgets are on the way with Dell Inc. planning a tablet with
Microsoft operating system, and Intel Corp. planning its Ultrabook.
